The Opportunity

We are looking for a Senior Project Geologist to join a global highly skilled professional exploration team focused on identifying, evaluating and delivering multi commodity projects with the potential to deliver the Rio Tinto Group ore bodies capable of becoming large, low-cost, long life mines. In this specific role, the geologist will be part of the Canadian Ni-Cu-PGE exploration team, based in Thunder Bay, Ontario.

Rio Tinto's Exploration group seeks to create value for the business by discovering or acquiring new mineral resources. Organized into four regional teams (Americas, Australasia, Africa-Europe and Eurasia), the Exploration group provides both a global reach and a local presence across a range of commodities including bauxite, copper, coking coal, iron ore, nickel and uranium.

What the role entails

This role is a great opportunity for a motivated individual to move into a global exploration and mining company and positions the right candidate on a team dedicated to the exploration for nickel, copper and PGEs in Canada, with technical and operational project responsibilities. Working and reporting to the Principal Geologist, you will be:

• Planning and conducting exploration projects Technical, operational and HSEC planning within Rio Tintos Integrated Project Management Framework.
• Coaching and mentoring the technical staff in best practice for mapping, sampling, core logging and 3D modelling
• Managing Technical and Operational staff
• Managing project contracts and contract staff
• Complying with the appropriate regulations, agreements and commitments of the province and legal agreements of the project.

• Delivering new opportunities through target generation
• Implementing and monitoring of Rio Tinto HSEC standards projecting a focus on critical risks

What you will need for this role

To succeed in this role, you will have:

• Tertiary degree in geology or related field (with honours)
• Proven leadership experience
• A minimum of 5 years experience in a similar role with 10+ years industry experience
• Broad knowledge of mineral deposits within several commodities with problem solving skills applied to technical concepts and problems
• Proven ability to implement exploration programs

• Commitment to safe work practices

• Ability and desire to participate in field activities.

It will also be beneficial if you have:

• Advanced level of nickel and/or PGE exploration experience
• Experience in mineral exploration techniques for a variety of commodity styles
• Proficiency in ArcGIS and Leapfrog Geo
